Sportsbook FAQ: Your Real Questions About Betting Apps Answered

Answers to the most common sportsbook questions — rollover math, credit card declines, minimum age by state, offshore risks, and fastest payouts.

What is a sportsbook, and how does online betting work?

A sportsbook takes wagers on sporting events and pays out winning bets. Online sportsbooks let you do that from your phone or browser — no trip to a casino required. You open an account, deposit funds, pick a market, and place your bet. If it wins, you collect. Simple in principle; the details matter.

The Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on state-sanctioned sports betting in May 2018. Since then, 39 states plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico have legalized it. Your physical location when you place the bet is what determines legality — not where you live or where you opened your account.

Is sports betting legal in my state?

Probably, but not guaranteed. As of 2026, roughly 11 states still have no legal sports betting. A few others have restrictions: Mississippi limits app use to casino premises; Montana restricts the Sports Bet Montana app to authorized locations. Check rg.org's state-by-state legality guide if you're unsure about your state.

What is the minimum age to bet on sports?

Most states require you to be 21 or older. A handful — including Kentucky and Washington D.C. — allow 18+ betting. Venue policies may still enforce 21+ entry where alcohol is served. When in doubt, check your state regulator's site. Must be 21+ (18+ in select states). Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER.

How do rollover requirements actually work?

A rollover is a wagering multiplier. Say you deposit $100 and receive a $75 bonus with a 5× rollover. That means you must place $875 in total bets — (100 + 75) × 5 — before any bonus-derived funds can be withdrawn. The counter tracks handle, not profits. Winning big early doesn't skip the clock.

Bonus bets work differently. Those are non-cashable credits. If a bonus bet wins, only the profit comes back as real money — the credit stake itself is not returned. Our Sportsbook Bonus Rankings breaks down which welcome offers clear at a reasonable pace.

Why was my credit card declined?

US banks frequently block gambling charges at the processor level. It's not always the sportsbook's fault. Beyond that, some operators don't accept credit cards at all — Fanatics Sportsbook categorically does not. Use a debit card, PayPal, ACH, or Play+ Prepaid Card instead.

Which sportsbooks pay out the fastest?

Bet365 is the fastest licensed US operator I've tested — withdrawals typically clear in 12–48 hours, and PayPal cashouts often land in under one hour. ACH takes 2–3 business days on top of operator processing. Paper checks and wire transfers are the slowest options available.

Play+ Prepaid Cards offer instant withdrawals, but each operator issues its own card, so managing multiple platforms means juggling multiple balances. For a full breakdown, see Fastest-Paying Sportsbooks: Withdrawal Speeds Ranked and Tested. The full Bet365 Sportsbook Review has more detail on its payout process.

What does the sportsbook take on every bet?

At standard -110 odds on both sides of a spread, the hold is roughly 4.77%. That's the built-in profit margin. Heritage Sports offers reduced juice at -108, which lowers that margin and improves long-run value. Futures markets carry much higher hold percentages — avoid them if value matters to you.

Are offshore sportsbooks safe for US players?

No. Offshore operators hold no US state license, answer to no US regulator, and have no formal obligation to pay you out. There's no complaint process and no recourse if they close. Stick to licensed operators. Our main sportsbook reviews hub covers only US-licensed books.

How do I compare sportsbooks to find the right one?

I look at six things: state licensing, odds quality (hold percentage), bonus fine print, payment methods, withdrawal speed, and app reliability. The FanDuel vs DraftKings comparison is a good starting point if you're deciding between the two largest operators. For broader brand-versus-brand context, the BetMGM vs Caesars breakdown covers another common decision point.

Welcome bonuses are marketing tools, not gifts. Never deposit more than you planned just to unlock a larger headline number. Read minimum odds, eligible bet types, and the expiry date before you commit a dollar.
